Pazin – A Town That Inspired Jules Verne | Private Tour from Pula
In 1885, Jules Verne published Mathias Sandorf, one of his most beloved adventure novels. The climactic prison escape – where three men plunge from a castle into a mysterious underground cave and disappear – was set in a real place: Pazin, in the heart of Istria. Today you can stand at the very spot, peer into the same abyss, and walk in the footsteps of literatures greatest escapees. IN MOTION provides private chauffeur transfer from your hotel to Pazin – approximately 40 minutes from Pula.
The Kastel – Istrias Oldest Castle
Pazins Kastel is the oldest and best-preserved castle in Istria, rising dramatically above a 100-metre cliff that falls directly into the cave system below. The castle was built in the 9th century and served as the seat of the Pazin County for centuries. Inside, the Pazin Town Museum traces the layered history of both the town and the wider Istrian region.
The Jules Verne Connection
In his novel, Vernes hero and his two companions are captured while plotting against the Austro-Hungarian Empire and imprisoned in this very castle. What follows is one of literatures great escapes – the three men plunge from the castle prison into the mysterious Cave of Pazin, vanishing into the dark waters below. Verne described the cave with extraordinary accuracy. Today, the town celebrates its literary heritage with a dedicated trail, signage, and the beloved character of cook Marie, who prepares a traditional peasant meal in the spirit of the novel.
The Cave of Pazin
The Pazinska jama (Cave of Pazin) is one of the most dramatic natural features in Croatia. The Pazincica River disappears underground at this point, carving a cavern beneath the cliff below the castle. The cave is accessible via guided tours and offers an eerie, beautiful glimpse into the karst underworld that Jules Verne immortalised.
Combine with Zipline: The same cave system is the setting for the world-famous Zipline Pazin experience – combine both in a single day trip. Your World, In Motion.
